Propaganda I'm Not Falling For: Thrifting Edition

Why I'm not buying into the myths about secondhand style.

If you're on TIkTok, you've probably seen the trend going around: "propaganda I'm not falling for." It's where people call out the lies, hype, or marketing tactics that just aren't working on them. Naturally, I had to give it a thrifting twist.

Here’s the Thrifting Propaganda I’m Not Falling For:

🫠 “Thrifting Is Too Overwhelming”

I get it. Walking into a huge thrift store can feel daunting, and that’s one of the reasons I prefer thrifting at Indy Clover. Indy Clover is organized by seller, making it easy to shop by size, aesthetic, or brand. Each booth is like the sellers' very own curated mini thrift store. Shopping by the booth feels a lot more manageable than sifting through aisles and aisles of clothing.

Pro tip: always check above and below the racks—many sellers use the shelves to display accessories, shoes, and folded clothing pieces. You never know what treasures you’ll find!

🧼 “Thrifting is Dirty”

Let’s clear this one up. The idea that thrifting is dirty is a common and outdated misconception. I always wash my thrifted clothes before I wear them, but that has never once stopped me from taking home a one-of-a-kind piece I found at the thrift store.

At Indy Clover, every seller is responsible for cleaning and prepping their items before setting up their booth. Our booths are filled with gently used, often name-brand pieces that are both clean and stylish.

Secondhand shopping doesn’t mean sacrificing quality. It means giving amazing pieces another chance.

🛍️ “You Can’t Find Good Brands at Thrift Stores”

I’ve discovered so many brands I had never heard of—and others I never could’ve afforded—thanks to thrifting. I recently found a basically new dress from Hill House for $12 at Indy Clover Wakefield. It retailed for almost $200. I could go on forever about all the amazing deals I’ve scored on high-quality brands at Indy Clover.

From Reformation, Free People, and Anthropologie to Coach, Levi’s, and Lululemon, Indy Clover is full of hidden gems.

Shopping tip: Our sellers often list brand names and sizes on their booth signs so you can easily spot your favorites.

💸 “Fast Fashion Is More Affordable”

Let’s break it down. That $5 shirt youbought from a fast fashion brand might fall apart after one wash. But a $10vintage, 100% cotton, secondhand top from Indy Clover? It has already stood thetest of time and still has so many more wears left in it.

🌎 “My Shopping Habits Don’t Impact Sustainability”

Even with thrifting becoming morepopular, thrift stores still can’t rehome every item and often end up recyclingor throwing away unsold inventory. Every time you choose to shop secondhand atIndy Clover, you help reduce waste and extend the life cycle of clothing.

One outfit might not change the world, but thousands of secondhand choices made by everyday shoppers definitely makean impact.

Thrifting is one of the easiest and most powerful ways to support sustainable fashion.

What Thrift Propaganda Are You Not Falling For?

We’ve all heard the myths—thrifting is gross, too hard, not worth it. But the truth is, secondhand shopping can be stylish, sustainable, and seriously fun, especially when you know where to go.

For me, shopping at Indy Clover completely changed the way I see thrifting. It’s clean, curated, and filled with pieces that make me excited to get dressed!
